I was a finalist for the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship program for Swahili and I traveled to Arusha, Tanzania for 8 weeks to improve my Swahili skills and learn more about East African culture.

Students of the first ever HU Zulu Study Abroad Program land in South Africa

Last week marked the beginning of the first ever Howard University Zulu in South Africa Study Abroad Program, led by Dr. Phiwokuhle Mnyandu! Nine students, eight of whom are of the Foreign Language and Areas Studies Fellowship (FLAS) recipients, will undergo a 6-week experiential study of the Zulu language and culture. Many thanks to CfAS Director, Professor Krista Johnson. Howard’s Center for African Studies remains at the forefront of cultural competency training to make our students competitive in the global economy.

Dr. Saïs Kamalidiin and Music students travel to Senegal

In December 2022, Dr. Saïs Kamalidiin, Associate Professor of Music at Howard, led a group of Howard University musical artists and scholars from The Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts to Dakar, Senegal for a musical arts intensive featuring visits to all the centers of higher musical education located in Dakar, Senegal, with meetings with former Senegalese Minister of Culture, Youssou N'Dour and MacArthur Fellowship recipient, Tomeka Reid. The Language of Diplomacy

For senior Ashley Tousana, learning languages is the first step to building foreign relations. She has spent enough time studying Mandarin and living abroad in China that she considers it a second home. It has also reinforced her interest in possibly pursuing a career in China-Africa development affairs, specifically in their trade policy and economic relations.
