International Model African Union (IMAU)

In collaboration with the African Union Mission in Washington, D.C. and Member State Embassies, the International Model African Union (IMAU) is an annual simulation of the African Union, the regional organization of African states. In 2027, the 25th IMAU will celebrate 47 years of simulation of the Organization of African Unity and now African Union.

CfAS is the new Secretariat for the International Model African Union (IMAU)

The Center for African Studies at Howard University has been selected to assume the Secretariat for the International Model African Union (IMAU), a prestigious role that enhances Howard’s global profile while directly benefiting students through leadership, curriculum development, immersive events, and study abroad opportunities linked to the African Union. This initiative advances our interdisciplinary mission by engaging 200–300 students annually in diplomacy and governance simulations, with Howard students serving as Host Delegates and gaining year-round professional development that prepares them for careers in international institutions and global industries. As Secretariat, CfAS also strengthens partnerships with the African Union Commission and embassies, positioning Howard as a central hub in global African affairs and ensuring students retain access to exceptional networks and opportunities.

During the 2026 conference in February, our Center was officially recognized as the new Secretariat of IMAU. The Director of CfAS, Dr. Krista Johnson, now serves as Convener of IMAU, and Dr. Phiwokuhle Mnyandu, who served as Howard University’s 2026 Delegate Advisor, has been appointed Associate Convener. This milestone is both an honor and a strategic opportunity. As Secretariat of Model AU, CfAS is uniquely positioned to expand and intentionally grow participation from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), strengthening access to high-level African and global policy simulations for students across the country.
