Summer Institute for Educators

Our Outreach team hosts a Summer Institute for highly motivated educators interested in reading, learning, and teaching about Africa. This year's institute theme is "Healing and Justice: Medieval Stories from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Egypt" with focus on material for educators of Grades 6-12 across disciplines. No fee required.

African Studies Summer Leadership Institute at Howard for High School Students

The Department of African Studies at Howard is happy to announce the African Studies Summer Leadership Institute for high school students. Students will engage in six weeks of experiential learning where they will dialogue with world dignitaries, formulate policy, work in solution driven teams, network, meet faculty/administrators, and learn about the interdisciplinary aspects of African Studies at Howard University ranging from culture, history, and traditions to foreign policy, environment, and gender. The program will facilitate students presenting solution-based projects to address some of the world’s social problems. 

In collaboration with the Mayor Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP), the Department will help to economically uplift and empower high achieving youth from across the DC region providing a safe and enriching summer alternative. The program is targeting high school students with a minimum 3.5 GPA. 

Field Trips include New York City, Library of Congress, Museum of African Art, a local African restaurant, African centered bookstore, and so much more!

Application deadline is June 1st for non-MBSYEP youth.
Application deadline for MBSYEP youth passed in March.

The 2024 CABA Winners have been announced!

The Children’s Africana Book Awards (CABA) are presented annually to the authors and illustrators of the best children’s and young adult books on Africa published or republished in the U.S. Africa Access and the Outreach Council of the African Studies Association (ASA) created CABA in 1991 to encourage the publication and use of accurate, balanced children’s materials about Africa.

Executive Education Program

The Executive Education Program of the Center for African Studies at Howard University is a niche program that is designed for working professionals engaged in African affairs. It aims to enable management teams, boards of directors, senior leaders, mid-career professionals, and emerging young leaders to realize their full potential when they lead projects that are located in Africa or involve the African diaspora. Like many executive programs, our target audience includes government agencies, international organizations, and global businesses.

Affiliated Faculty

A priority for our Center is to facilitate and nurture a community of HU scholars with interest in Africa. Affiliated Faculty at the Center for African Studies devote at least 25 - 100% of their research, teaching, and/or service to the study of Africa and represent a wide range of departments and colleges across campus.

We include all faculty with active or aspirational research and/or teaching interests in Africa as affiliated faculty, and look forward to promoting their work and scholarship on our website and throughout our networks. We invite faculty to share with us what they are doing so that we can publicize it to a wider audience.

Affiliate faculty are eligible for CfAS course and travel awards, research grants, funding for books, and more.
