HU Akan Twi Language & Cultural Immersion in Ghana

Howard University Akan Twi Language & Cultural Immersion in Ghana (HUATG) is a 3-week study abroad program for immersion in both the language and the culture of the Akan people in Ghana. Using instruction and experiential learning of Akan culture within varying Akan communities, participants in HUATG may look forward to receiving 140 credit hours in Akan Twi language and culture while in the embracing country of Ghana.

NB: Students may apply for the FLAS Fellowship to fund their participation in the program.

Program Objectives

The Akan Twi Immersion Program in Ghana offers a transformative experience for participants to delve into the vibrant world of the Twi language and the Akan culture. Through an intensive, culturally grounded approach, this program caters to Akan Twi learners willing to expand on their proficiency by providing structured language instruction alongside immersive experiences in urban and rural settings. Participants will engage in meaningful community service projects addressing local needs, fostering a deeper connection to Ghanaian communities while developing linguistic proficiency. This program not only equips learners with practical Twi skills but also enriches their understanding of the Akan traditions, values, and contemporary significance in global cultural and economic trends.

Eligibility

HUATG is open to all Howard University and non-Howard University students of any major.

Program Description

The HUATG program will last for 3 weeks and take place in the Greater Accra, Central, Western, Volta and Eastern Regions. Activities for the program will focus on the language, history, and culture of the Ghanaian people in the following location-specific phases:

  • Week 1: Accra & Cape Coast
  • Week 2: Axim & Kumase
  • Week 3: Volta Region, Aburi & Accra

Program Highlights

This program enables you to:

  • Strengthen your Akan Twi language skills through being immersed into the native context
  • Learn about the Akan people, culture and customs in an immersive manner
  • Have a feel of campus life in the University of Ghana and Ashesi University Campus
  • An intensive 140 hours of Akan Twi language instruction (an equivalent of 3 credits)
  • Get hands-on workshop on Kente and Adinkra cloths
  • Visit the palace of the Asante King
  • See what Ghana has to offer to you as an international scholar
  • Work towards fulfilling HU foreign language requirement

Estimated Program Cost

Non-HU credit option: $6,500
FLAS students: $5,500 + HU Tuition (3 credits).  

Both options include: 

  • Tuition and full board accommodation
  • Round-trip airfare, airport pick-up & drop off
  • Administrative, fieldtrips & local transport fees
  • Excursions
  • Travel insurance

The program fee does not include:

Personal expenses, HU tuition, passport, visa, and extra luggage.

*Eligible students may fund their participation through FLAS, apply here for the FLAS Fellowship.

  • March 14: Passport and Visa Processing
  • March 21: Mandatory Orientation - Session I
  • April 22: Pre-departure orientation - Session II
  • May 19: Final payment deadline
  • May 23: HU Summer Session I begins
  • June 9: Departure for Ghana
  • July 29: Return to the United States

Suggested Payment Schedule

PROGRAM FEES: $6,500 or $5,500

If you do not have a scholarship, please submit your payments to HUATG Coordinator Locke Hall Room 350. Checks should be made payable to Howard University per each payment you make as recommended below:

  • February 15: Application fee - $250
  • March 15: First payment - $1312.50
  • April 12: Second payment - $1312.50
  • May 2: Third payment - $1312.50
  • May 12: Final payment - $1312.50
