New Federal Grant for the Department of World Languages and Cultures

The Department of World Languages and Cultures has been awarded a three-year grant of $156,445.00 by the Department of Education to develop authentic multimedia instructional materials at the Intermediate and Advanced levels of Amharic, Swahili, and Wolof languages. The grant is part of the International Research and Studies program which aims to improve and strengthen instruction in modern foreign languages, area studies, and other international fields.

The Language of Diplomacy

For senior Ashley Tousana, learning languages is the first step to building foreign relations. She has spent enough time studying Mandarin and living abroad in China that she considers it a second home. It has also reinforced her interest in possibly pursuing a career in China-Africa development affairs, specifically in their trade policy and economic relations.

Alumni Highlights: Interview with Darryl L. Jones II

We interviewed our alumnus, Darryl L. Jones II, regarding his Ph.D. education and language training at Howard. Darryl is a proud Ph.D. graduate of Howard University's Department of African Studies and Research and the historic class of 2020.  At Howard, his academic research explored the nexus of climate change, environmental degradation, and human security – specifically that of descent-based slavery and issues of terrorism – in Mauritania, under the direction of Dr. Alem Hailu.

Student’s Corner: Learning Somali

If I could choose one word to describe my semester in Somali 001 it would be worthwhile. I was considering which foreign language I wanted to take for this semester and I told myself I could take a language that was common (ex: Spanish., French, etc. ). However, I wanted to give myself a challenge and learn a language that was not very common and comes from an African country.
