Dr. Phiwokuhle Mnyandu, gives a keynote address at the 16th Beijing Forum on African Development and China-Africa Cooperation

The  Assistant Director of the Center for African Studies, Dr. Phiwokuhle Mnyandu, gave a keynote address at the 16th Beijing Forum on African Development and China-Africa Cooperation held at the prestigious Peking University. This year's program centered heavily on the intersection between the Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Development Initiative, in the lead-up to the 2030 deadline for the latter. Speakers included leading multidisciplinary experts from Asia, Africa, western Europe, and the United States.

Voice of America showcases African languages at Howard

The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down affirmative action programs for university admissions in the United States. Will those affected turn to the country’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities? Haydé Adams, host of Straight Talk Africa on VOA, and her guests explore the role of HBCUs in building new bridges between the United States and African countries.

Professor Johnson granted Full Professorship

We are glad to announce that our Director, Krista Johnson, Ph.D. has been granted Full Professorship in the Department of African Studies at Howard University. Congratulations to Professor Johnson!
 

Students of the first ever HU Zulu Study Abroad Program land in South Africa

Last week marked the beginning of the first ever Howard University Zulu in South Africa Study Abroad Program, led by Dr. Phiwokuhle Mnyandu! Nine students, eight of whom are of the Foreign Language and Areas Studies Fellowship (FLAS) recipients, will undergo a 6-week experiential study of the Zulu language and culture. Many thanks to CfAS Director, Professor Krista Johnson. Howard’s Center for African Studies remains at the forefront of cultural competency training to make our students competitive in the global economy.

Howard University researchers say the stability of South Africa is at risk. The warning comes as the US ambassador dropped a bombshell about SA supplying Russia with weapons.

Howard University student Malik Ngugi spoke before Vice President Kamala Harris at the Museum of African American History and Culture on April 5, 2023, where the VP was giving a briefing on her recent trip to Africa. Malik, a junior in political science and Spanish major, shared his reflections on Harris's historic visit to Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia.
