About the Book
The Kaya Girl, authored by Mamle Wolo is a novel that explores a friendship that develops against the backdrop of wealth and poverty. Abena, a doctor's daughter, is spending her summer vacation working at her auntie's shop in Accra's Makola Market, a place she and her wealthy mall-shopping friends would never frequent. Faiza is a Muslim migrant worker from northern Ghana. She makes her living as a kayayoo, toting packages on her head for shoppers in the market. When the two girls meet, they form an unlikely and powerful friendship that crosses many boundaries. Recommended for middle and high school students.
