Call for Panelists: "Going Global, Growing Global" Community College Symposium

Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC)


The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), in collaboration with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and Montgomery College’s Global Humanities Institute, invites you and/or representatives from your college to participate in the second annual Going Global, Growing Global Community College Symposium.

This one-day event will be held on Friday, April 17, 2020, approx. 9 am – 4 pm, at NOVA’s Annandale campus and will focus on increasing professional development, growing global education programs and internationalizing curricula at DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland area community colleges.

Below is a tentative schedule of the day’s events, along with suggested panels and topics for discussion, developed by the event’s organizing committee:

              9:00 – 9: 30 am                  Arrival and Check-In Period

              9:30 – 9:45 am                   Welcome and Opening Remarks

              9:45 – 11:15 am                 Panel I: Student Impact and Success Stories

(3-4 faculty and/or student presentations conveying the importance and impact of international education for student outcomes)

·         How global perspectives improved my teaching (and student learning) (faculty member story)

·         How study abroad (or internationalization) led to employment (Internationalization and workforce development story by student/alum)

·         How study abroad (or internationalization) led to transfer to 4-yr institution and/or international major (pipeline story by student/alum)

·         The view of an international student (NOVA)

              11:30 am – 12:30 pm         Breakout Sessions (x3, running concurrently)

                                                          (smaller group sessions, facilitated by group leader(s), discussing themes like:

·         Administration Views on International Education

·         Strategies for Growing Student Study Abroad

·         Program and Funding Resources for CCs (US govt, private, etc.)

·         Growing Internationalization in STEM and Applied Fields

              12:30 – 1:30 pm                 Lunch

              1:30 – 3:00 pm                   Panel II: Best Practices in College Internationalization

                                                          (3-4 presentations re: successful case studies in the following areas:

·         Building Consortia and Partnerships (NOVA)

·         Online Education and Course Offerings

·         Virtual International Exchanges

·         Faculty Professional Development/Capacity Building

·         Growing International Student Recruitment and Retention

·         Building Sustainability into International Programs

              3:00 – 3:15 pm                   Closing Remarks

              3:15 – 4:00 pm                   Reception
